A narrow inner-city plot in Earls Court, overlooked and hemmed in, opening off a house with a beautiful contemporary interior. The clients grew up in Australia and wanted something of home in their London garden, in a temperate climate very different from the warm tropics.

The brief was an oasis, and the design answers it with a layered, exploratory garden that does not reveal itself at once. Texture, shade and architectural form draw you through the space towards a raised deck at the rear, which catches the last of the evening sun and is where the family gather, together or with friends.
Planting is a tapestry of greens and forms that reads as subtropical while being chosen for London’s climate. Corten steel and granite plank paving carry the language of the interior out into the garden, so the two read as one.
